Interesting “did you know facts” about Memorial Day:

Memorial Day used to be referred to as Decoration Day.

There is a moment of silence every year on Memorial Day at 3 P.M. local time

On Memorial Day, the flag of the United States is raised briskly to the top of the staff and then solemnly lowered to the half-staff position, where it remains only until noon. It is then raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day. The half-staff position remembers the more than one million men and women who gave their lives in service of their country. At noon, their memory is raised by the living, who resolves not to let their sacrifice be in vain, but to rise up in their stead and continue the fight for liberty and justice for all.

The long-cherished Memorial Day tradition of wearing red poppies got its start in 1915. While reading Ladies’ Home Journal, an overseas war secretary named Moina Michael came across the famous World War I poem “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae, which begins, “In Flanders fields the poppies blow/ Between the crosses, row on row.” Moved, she vowed always to wear a silk poppy in honor of the American soldiers who gave up their lives for their country. She started selling them to friends and co-workers and campaigned for the red flowers to become an official memorial emblem. The American Legion embraced the symbol in 1921, and the tradition has spread to more than 50 other countries, including England, France and Australia.

The Arizona Winds concludes its 2013-2014 concert season with two concerts honoring America’s men and women who serve in our Armed Forces, and those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice to guarantee America’s freedom for 239 years. The concert opens with a composition entitled “Festival Overture on the American National Air-The Star Spangled Banner”, which develops the melodic themes of our National Anthem in an 19th Century-style orchestral setting that ends with an emotionally charged version of “The Star Spangled Banner”. The program takes a step back in time to explore some musical themes which were popular during the American Civil War such as “Listen To The Mocking Bird”, “Camptown Races”, “When Johnny Comes Marching Home”, “The Yellow Rose of Texas”, and the ever inspiring “Battle Hymn of the Republic”. With a nod to our Greatest Generation, the band will perform an audience favorite, Richard Rogers’ “Victory At Sea”. On the lighter side, the band will highlight themes from memorable musical moments. There will be plenty of marches and a Salute to our Armed Forces to prime your patriotism. Mountain Ridge High School Auditorium, 22800 North 67th Avenue, Glendale. Free admission.

History of Black Friday

Posted on: November 27th, 2013 by Ryan Lee No Comments

black friday lines

For millions of people Black Friday is the time to do some serious Christmas shopping –even before the last of the Thanksgiving leftovers are gone! Black is the Friday after Thanksgiving, and it’s one of the major shopping days of the year in the United States -falling anywhere between November 23 and 29. While it’s not recognized as an official US holiday, many employees have the day off -except those working in retail, this means our entire family here at AZ MATTRESS OUTLET.

The term “Black Friday” was coined in the 1960s to mark the kickoff to the Christmas shopping season. “Black” refers to stores moving from the “red” to the “black,” back when accounting records were kept by hand, and red ink indicated a loss, and black a profit. Ever since the start of the modern Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in 1924, the Friday after Thanksgiving has been known as the unofficial start to a bustling holiday shopping season.

As retailers began to realize they could draw big crowds by discounting prices, Black Friday became the day to shop, even better than those last minute Christmas sales. Some retailers put their items up for sale on the morning of Thanksgiving, or email online specials to consumers days or weeks before the actual event. The most shopped for items are electronics and popular toys, as these may be the most drastically discounted. However, prices are slashed on everything from home furnishings and mattresses to toys and apparel.

Black Friday is a long day, with many retailers opening up at 5 am or even earlier to hordes of people waiting anxiously outside the windows. At AZ Mattress Oultet we will be asleep at 5am, but our doors will open for normal business hours 10am-7pm, but prices will be anything but normal! There are numerous doorbuster deals and loss leaders other stores use as a gimmick to get customers in the door, but with such limited supply that most consumers never get the deal they came for.  At AZ MATTRESS OUTLET we guarantee our advertised BLACK FRIDAY SPECIALS will be in stock or a rain check will be issued.  Most large retailers post their Black Friday ad scans, coupons and offers online beforehand to give consumers time to find out about sales and plan their purchases. Other companies take a different approach, waiting until the last possible moment to release their Black Friday ads, hoping to create a buzz and keep customers eagerly checking back for an announcement. We have several deals so hot that they are not listed anywhere and you must come into the store to get details.

So, there you have it – the Black Friday history behind the best shopping day of the year!  If you wake up at 5am to shop at any other mattress store your wasting your day off to sleep in.  We will beat any price on the same item and our prices are so low every day is like Black Friday!  Call today and place your order over the phone.  We can deliver your bed the same day.  We have clearance items within each store and prices to fit any budget. We are a local, family owned small business and appreciate your support within the community.
